Ipoh Old Town has many similarities with George Town. The streets are filled with Chinese-style old shops and some British architecture buildings , frescoes are painted on old walls, beautiful allies of hanging lanterns in Chinatown and natural limestone structures makes it one of the must visit for travelers.
At the foothills of Gunung Tasek lies a Buddhist temple built into the limestone hill “the Perak Tong Cave Temple”. It is one of Ipoh’s most popular attractions. This was discovered by Chong Sen Yee and his wife, who came to Malaya from Jiaoling, China. Over the next 50 years, the couple worked tirelessly to transform it into a beautiful place of worship. This is one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples I have ever been to. Set amidst a backdrop of hills and lush greenery. Inside, a 15m-tall Buddha statue sits in the main prayer hall, surrounded by four guardian deities.
Our next stop was Sam Poh Tong temple also known as the turtle temple. One could see lot of turtles there and the temple is also carved in the cave. The cave temple contains significant artworks, including a sculpture of a reclining Buddha.
There are steep steps leading to different parts of the cave, some opening to wonderful vistas and panoramic views of Ipoh. There is also a passageway into a secret garden, within the garden is a 5 tier pagoda.
Then we visited the Ling Sen Tong temple as well. This is also a cave temple located next door to Sam Poh Tong temple. This temple is quite different from its neighbours. The garden in front is decorated with colourful statues of characters from Chinese mythology such as the Monkey King.
The cartoon-like caricatures of dragons and many more can be found in the garden which makes lot of kids to visit this place. Some film shoot was also going on while we went there.
Tempurung Cave is a cave in Gopeng, within the Kinta Valley Geopark. It is popular among caving enthusiasts. More than 3 km long, it is one of the longest caves in Peninsular Malaysia.
It is estimated the mineral deposits here are 250 to 400 million years old. We walked inside the cave and there are lights lit up so you can see the entire cave structure. There are some small openings from where the sunlight enters. We also visited the Tin museum which gave an insight of this cave.
Just outside the cave was a small stream where you could see the visitors spending some good time.
On the way back we had Lemang from a road side eatery, a traditional food made from glutinous rice, coconut milk and salt, cooked in a hollowed bamboo tube coated with banana leaves in order to prevent the rice from sticking to the bamboo.
The river walk at Kinta riverfront is a blissful place by the river bank. With the kaleidoscopic neon trees, superb reflection into the water, live band playing at Cafes and on one side of the riverbank, the canopy is studded with twinkling lights with lot of shops around, it is a perfect place to relax and take an evening stroll.
