Coron is a large island that is part of the Palawan archipelago in the Philippines. It is located on the main island Busuanga and is the most developed island in the region.
This is a great place to start or end your time island hopping in Palawan. It is it slightly less crowded and more affordable than El Nido. The island has some fantastic scenery just about everywhere you look and you can feel its very different to El nido.
Coron Island in the Palawan province of the Philippines is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden lakes, and crystal-clear waters, with about 70% of the island being rocky, featuring towering karst formations. Limestone cliffs in Coron are composed primarily of sedimentary rock that originated from coral reefs and shells of marine organisms millions of years ago. Over time, these deposits were subject to heat and pressure, gradually turning into limestone formations.
We reached Coron on an expedition boat from El nido. When coming closer to the Coron island you could see the dramatic structures raising above the ocean to give you a visiual treat. It was drizzling a bit, giving a foggy look over the mountain which looked surreal.
The boat dropped us at the jetty, you could see the mountain Tapyas with the name board of Coron. Jetty looked very busy and we took a tuk tuk to our hostel.
The hostel we stayed at was a little on the outskrits next a small mountain. View the rooftop restaurant and pool were amazing. It’s definitely a recommended place to stay.
Later in the evening we explored this town and had some street food. This place looked far more developed than El nido. Met with an English dive instructor who runs a brewery in Coron. He gave a lot of insights about this island.
Never knew we could have a 100% chance of seeing Dugong in a particular area in Busuanga and also a huge wreck dive with penetration can be done in Coron until we reached here. We did not give us enough time to dive here as we thought El nido was a better place and spent most of our time diving there.
Just had a day to explore Coron. We walked around exploring the streets and local life of Coron also we did see the beautiful lagoons and limestone rocky structures here in Coron. The place that had it’s vibe until late in the evening is the “Bum Bum”.. Where you could meet a lot of travellers and we met a bunch of people from the expedition. There are a lot of Karoke places around and he hopped to a few before calling it a day!
Next day we had a flight to get back to Manila, reached the airport pretty early. It looked small but beautiful with those tiny hill on the backdrop. It was time to say goodbye to Palawan!
