Lake Toba is a lake and supervolcano. The lake is 100 km long, 30 km wide, and up to 505 meters (1,666 ft) deep. Located in northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Lake Toba is the site of a massive supervolcanic eruption occurred 69,000 to 77,000 years ago. It is the largest known explosive eruption on Earth in the last 25 million years.
Since my flight landed late in Medan we decided to take a cab direct to parapat instead of bus. The entire journey was through sumatrian villages and this gave us a good feel of the Island and people. We reached parapat in the evening and we were there for the last ferry to Samosir Island which is located in middle of Lake Toba.
The travel by ferry, at the time of sunset was heavenly. It was good 45 mins ferry from parapat and we were there at top deck to see the beauty of this journey. And watching the kids play in the lake, sun going down behind the mountains, dark cloudy skies made it more than memorable.

After reaching Samosir we were looking for cheap accommodation preferably hostel. But we got a room right next to the Lake in a luxury resort. There was a machan(evelavted place high up), we went to the top most spot on the machan and view of the whole lake made our day. Had tea and were chitchatting for hours together then had dinner and went to a live music place in the island. Although whole of the Island was silent this place changed the entire atmosphere and spent the entire evening there.

Next day morning to our surprise for $15 each that we paid to stay there was a Royal complementary breakfast and had a heavy breakfast. We took two bikes and started driving around the lake. The drive was extremely scenic and hardly few vechiles on the island it was a pleasure to drive without any traffic. This island has everything to offer from heritage sites, natural beauty of lake tiny hills, hot springs, forests, etc. We stopped by a vegan restaurant right next to the lake and with sumatrian food this place was extremely relaxing after a long drive in the hot sun. Then after lunch we drove along paddy fields and mountains. All the houses here are built in Batik style and even the temples, Offical buildings, cementries also were built in Batik style.

In the evening saw local Batik dance in one of the temple it’s a dance of toys. After exploring the Island for nearly 60km we returned to the hotel and spent time swimming in the freezing cold lake but it was refreshing.
