Taman Negara is Malaysia’s largest national park and is one of the world’s oldest tropical rainforests around 130 million years old. Covering an area of 4343 square kilometers.
I always wanted to go to Taman Negra and knew very well that a visit to this place will be an incredible travel experience. From Kulala Lumpur i took bus to Jerantut and took a shared transport until Kuala Tahan.
Taman Negara is a thick cover of rainforest surrounded by mountains and has plenty of wildlife. It’s home to Tigers, Leopards, Tapirs, elephants and many more.
You can also take a boat from Kuala Tembeling to Kuala Tahan village. The boat ride is on the Tahan river through the forest and takes a few hours to reach. Since I missed the last ferry, took a shared transport to Kuala Tahan.
Kuala Tahan village is situated on the confluence of Tahan and Tembiling rivers. It’s a very scenic place to stay, it has few floating restaurants as well. I stayed in a hostel next to the river and you need to take a boat across the river to reach the national park.
After lunch, i visited the Kampung Orang Asli tribal settlement. They are a group of nomadic tribes living in the Taman Negara national park, untouched by civilization. You will learn a lot about their culture when paying them a visit. They explained how to lit fire, cook their food, daily routine, etc. It’s getting a bit commercial these days though.
On the way back they will take the boat on the rapids, it’s called rapid shooting. At one point they might make you fall in the river too. Late in the evening I spent time in the floating restaurant and also signed up for night trail/safari.
We were taken in the buffer zone and did see some nocturnal birds like owls, night jars, etc.
Next morning after an early wake up call, it felt like heaven with mist surrounding the mountains, dense jungle and gushing sound of river. Had quick breakfast, crossed the river to the national park and signed up for a jungle trek.
Our trek was to Bukit Teresek. It’s not a very difficult hike but you will be walking in the dense rainforest of Taman Negara.
The world’s longest canopy walkway, 530 m long and 40 m above the ground level is suited here. It’s fun crossing it.
I made friends while hiking, some part of the trek had wooden stairs and some you need to take a rocky trail. It’s definitely an experience walking in the rainforest.
We reached the summit, view was very nice. On the way back there was a river flowing near by and spent time in the water swimming.
You need at least couple of days to have a feel of this serene place. This was definitely a must do if you are in Pahang in Peninsular Malaysia.
